About us

The Peace Kids was founded in 2008 by Mary Wald, Chairman and founder of TheCommunity.com. TheCommunity.com has been working directly with, and supporting the projects of, the Nobel Peace Prize winners for more than nine years. Six Nobel Peace Prize Laureates sit on its advisory board, as do leaders in the media and humanitarian fields.

TheCommunity.com has worked directly on projects with 25 of the 29 living Nobel Peace Prize winners.

The Peace Kids was founded as a separate organization to provide a child-safe environment for children to interact with the Nobel Laureates, and with each other, to learn how to make their world a better place.

It was founded as a project of the Tides Center (www.tidescenter.org) in San Francisco, the largest and most reputable fiscal sponsor of non-profit organizations in the US.

José Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize winner and President of East Timor, is Chairman of the Peace Kids' Advisory Board.

There is no political agenda to The Peace Kids. Children are not used for political causes or asked to take positions on international issues. The focus of The Peace Kids is learning to help other children in conflict or post-conflict situations. These include children in refugee camps, children cut off from access to education in their countries, and other situations where one child reaching out to another can have a strong positive impact.

A mosquito net, a letter, a pack of pencils, may seem small. But they are not small. For a mother and child displaced by conflict, it sends the communication that they are not forgotten -- something we know from many stories of conflict can be the message of hope one needs. For a child from a developed country, it teaches the lesson that one can make a difference in the world, no matter what age you are, that by a simple action you can change a condition halfway across the world for the better.

This is a lesson that we hope the children on both sides of the world will carry forward with them into adulthood.
